A true classic. Grammostola rosea, the rose hair tarantula (Common name is shared with some other species as well) This is a species of tarantula native to Chile, which is well known in the hobby as one of the longest lived species available, and one of the slowest growing... As adults rosea can reach about 6 inches in leg span and can live for several decades. They are usually about as mellow as a tarantula can get, and almost never will even throw hairs, let alone a threat pose. While there are some people out there that think this species is not exciting enough due to the slow growth rate and sedentary nature, they are a personal favorite of mine, and unfortunately, they can be hard to come by. Care is very simple, they will use a stereotypical terrestrial terrarium, which is kept primarily arid.
Note: It has been determined that what the hobby has known as Porteri for many years should be classified under the rosea name as well now. I will continue to use the old names (Porteri and Rosea RCF) to try to distinguish the very different color variations, but when in doubt, always ask to be sure which one is being referenced weather you’re looking for one from us or elsewhere.
