Poecilotheria are one of the most loved genera in the hobby, because of their beautiful patterning. One of the largest in the genus is Poecilotheria rufilata, which are a mix of colors from green to pink and red, with many others mixed in, and like many tarantulas, it's impossible to truly capture all the colors true to life with a camera. This is an arboreal species of Asian tarantula, native to India. Adult females can supposedly reach 10" or so in leg span (though i think ours is only about 8") and males usually mature a smaller. These are very quick, and are generally reported to be one of the testier species of Poecilotheria, and while still generally prone to flee, know that there is a little higher likelihood of the spider standing it's ground if disturbed.
Note: While the temperament of most specimens of the species is skittish and non confrontational, please be aware that the venom of Poecilotheria species is reported to be one of the most severe for people, and while not lethal, there are likely to be very intense, and undesirable effects, so be respectful to the spider, and take the basic precautions to avoid being in that situation.
Here at Shane's Spiders, we keep our pokies with mostly moist substrate to keep the environment a bit more humid. Most species in the genus have a pretty strong feeding response and a very good appetite, which results in a pretty quick growth rate.
